Order Permit and
Fingerprint Services Online

Effective December 1, 2015, North Carolina General Statute 14-404(e1) requires applicants to sign a release of court orders concerning mental health and capacity for pistol purchase permits.

You MUST come in to the Sheriff’s Office within five (5) business days after you have completed the online portion of the application. Your application process will not begin until this final step has been completed.

Unfortunately, we have experienced a significant backlog for the mental health background checks from Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) for all new and renewal Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) applications. However, CMC recently returned a tremendous amount of mental health releases to us and we are now working diligently to process those applications. We apologize for the processing delay of the applications brought on by the delay of CMC.

If you have any questions regarding the delay, please contact CMC's Corporate Health Information Management at 704-667-9500. If you have applied for a renewal of your CHP prior to the expiration date listed on your permit, your permit will remain valid to continue to carry concealed since you started the process prior to the expiration. However, you will not be able to purchase a firearm using your CHP until you receive your new CHP. The Sheriff's Office apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and thanks you for your patience.

A metal detector is now located at the entrance of the Gun Permit office to provide a safe environment for the employees and customers. Please leave any item(s) that can be deemed as hazardous or a weapon at home or in your vehicle. Examples of such items are located by clicking on this link.
