Mecklenburg County Detention Center Central is a direct supervision facility that opened in 1997. An additional tower was added in the second phase of construction in 2002 bringing the capacity to house over 1900 residents making it the largest municipal detention center in North and South Carolina.
Detention Center Central is a pre-trial facility that houses a full service medical component that includes and infirmary. Central also houses the Arrest Processing Center, a centralized property storage and administrative services and support services area.
Detention Center Central is the major operations hub of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office with multiple groups and subsections of the organization working in support of this operation.
