Detention Operations

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office operates the largest municipal detention system in both North and South Carolina. The Mecklenburg County Detention Centers (MCDC) are fully accredited through the American Correction Association (ACA) and has successfully maintained accreditation since 2003. The Mecklenburg County Detention Center also maintains a healthcare accreditation to ensure that we provide some of the best healthcare services for our resident population. Many residents arrive with drug or alcohol addictions, mental health problems, or both, requiring MCDC to administer a range of medical and rehabilitative programs.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Detention Division operates two detention facilities, Detention Center Central and a Juvenile Detention Center North. Persons across every ethnicity, age and socioeconomic group are booked into the Mecklenburg County Detention Centers. We operate a programs and best practices based detention model that offers educational and rehabilitative services aimed at improving the reentry success our returning citizens.
