Requirements

To apply for a detention Officer or Deputy Sheriff Trainee position, the following is required:

• Be at least 20 years old to apply / no age maximum
• Must be a citizen of the United States or naturalized citizen
• Graduation from an accredited U.S. high school or G.E.D. equivalence
• Valid Class C driver’s license (Out-of-state applicants can use a valid license from their home state while filing, but will need a valid North Carolina Class C license at the time of hire)
• No DWI/DUI arrest or convictions within the past five years and no more than two in a lifetime.
• No felony convictions or currently on probation; misdemeanors may be disqualifying, depending on the number, type of violation, and date of the violation
• Must meet all the applicable standards and qualify for State Certification in accordance with the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Training & Standards Commission as well as the General Orders of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
• No illegal drug usage (no Marijuana usage within one year).
• Be in good physical condition and free from any medical conditions that would interfere with the responsibilities of a Detention Officer or Deputy Sheriff.
• Must have Honorable Military Discharge, if applicable.
• Deputy Sheriff’s must live within 50 miles of Detention Center Central (upon being hired)*

Application Process

To apply for a detention Officer or Deputy Sheriff Trainee position, the following is required:

To make sure we’re getting the best applicants you must pass a number of screenings and assessments. The full process to become a Detention Officer or Deputy Sheriff Trainee can average between three and six months. The process can be shorter or longer, depending on the applicant.

Your path to success starts here:

1. Complete and submit an online application.
2. Take the CASAS Test on one of our many testing dates. If you receive a passing score, you immediately advance to take the Physical Assessment Test.
3. Take the Physical Assessment.
4. Schedule and complete a facility tour and/or ride-along.
5. Complete and submit Personal History Statement(F3) .
6. Complete the Structured Interview.
7. You will be assigned a Background Investigator, who will conduct a thorough background investigation.
8. Firearms Qualification (Deputy Sheriff Only)
9. Pre-Employment Physical.
10. Complete a psychological evaluation and medical examination.
11. Your completed background file will be submitted for an Administrative Review from Recruiting Sergeant.
12. Human Resource Appointment, prior to the start of the Academy.
13. Attend the DOCC/POST 10-week Academy.

If Denied
Applicants who are denied employment at any stage of the application process must wait a period of six months from the date of notification before they can reapply for the position.
